Apprenticeships and Job
Training Program

an apprentice, please click here!
From April 1 through the end of October, Garden Harvest
offers temporary employment to those with a sincere interest &
commitment to learn and employ the skills intrinsic to
sustainable agriculture and sustainable living. We also teach job training
skills for economically underprivileged persons. The goal is to
teach individuals highly marketable skills that will enable them
to pursue careers that pay a livable wage for the rest of their
lives. Everyone enrolled learns the basics of organic food
production so that wherever they go in life, they have the
knowledge and training to produce food and in a way that is
economically & environmentally sustainable. Beyond that,
apprentices can
specialize either more deeply in organic, sustainable
agriculture or in one or two trades, such as welding, masonry,
carpentry, etc., which are universally marketable skills that
promise permanent job security wherever they live.
As in food
production, the work done on farm buildings through the students’ learning
and practice of construction skills will promote Garden Harvest's mission of
the alleviation of hunger by providing the infrastructure necessary for the
egg and milk distribution programs as well as for further
expansion of the organic vegetable & fruit production programs.
Benefits:
We offer apprenticeships on a rolling basis from April 1 until
October 31 with some staying just a short time and others
longer. Hence, apprentices are generally exposed to a lot
of different people from varying backgrounds. We provide room,
vegetarian meals, and a stipend in addition to the education and
training. Learning experiences include animal husbandry,
specifically the care, maintenance, and use of goats, sheep,
chickens, geese, & guinea hens and how to employ these animals
best in a whole system of organic fruit, vegetable, milk, & eggs
production system.
What you won't be taught is how to raise animals
for meat, as we don't do that. We believe that animals
should be allowed to live out their lives, helping us humans by
producing food for us, directly as in eggs and milk, or
indirectly through their work fertilizing, weeding, and killing
pests.
