Garden Harvest's Education Programs
Children's Education Program
Starting in Y2000 by two committed volunteers,
Earl Millet and Liz Alex, Garden Harvest's Education Program
gives workshops during the months of February and March to
groups of kids in elementary schools, middle schools, and after
school programs.
After a formal education session, tailored to
the attention span of the specific group, the kids engage in the
project of planting vegetable seeds that will become plants
producing food for the needy. The kids then nurture their
plantings through germination and the first six - eight weeks of
growth until they are ready to be planted out in the field at
Garden Harvest.
Some of the groups are able to make field trips
to the farm both to plant the seedlings they have raised, and
then again in September to harvest the fruits of their labor,
then box, and pack them onto the truck for delivery to one the
area's soup kitchens, emergency food pantries, or shelters. This
way they experience the full cycle of food production and reap
the reward of seeing what a tangible contribution their little
bit of effort has made!
