Origin and Purpose

From its inception, Garden Harvest has incorporated education and training as an integral component of the accomplishment of its mission to alleviate hunger and improve nutrition of Maryland disadvantage citizens as well as to increase long-term food security locally, nationally, and globally.

Garden Harvest is gratified that there is such pervasive interest in the mission to alleviate hunger, as the more people who learn and implement the methodology taught at Garden Harvest, the greater and the quicker the success will be in the achievement of this goal. And, of course, with hunger eliminated, people everywhere can enjoy the good health and prosperity that promotes peace throughout all nations.

Running the gamut from the most basic orientation of volunteers to intensive daily instruction of interns, Garden Harvest serves to expand the consciousness and knowledge base of all who help out in the food production / donation program.  Garden Harvest focuses its teaching on three broad areas:

  •  Issues of hunger and poverty, to raise public awareness of the degree to which hunger continues to be an expanding problem: internationally, nationally, and in Baltimore City, and all counties of Maryland; to increase understanding of the policies – agricultural as well as political and economic – that create hunger; to build awareness of how the existence of hunger weakens our entire social fabric, thus adversely affecting every American citizens’ life; and, to inspire ordinary citizens to become pro-active in the fight against hunger and to illuminate them as to the specific actions they can take that will reduce hunger.
  • Nutrition, so that those served by Garden Harvest will learn how to best store, preserve, and prepare the produce to maximize its nutritional value and health giving benefits.
  • Methods of organic gardening/sustainable agriculture, to foster personal empowerment and community self-sufficiency, and to promote those methods of food production & animal husbandry that regenerate the land and increase productivity.
